According to a new report out of The Athletic, the Ottawa Senators will be going back to black uniforms and their old 2D logo for the 2020-21 NHL season.
It has been long time rumoured that the Sens were trying to do a rebrand but there have been many delays in the process. Back in July 2018, SportsLogos.net reported that the Sens sent out a survey to their season ticket holders asking them what their favourite logo was in their history (see image below) and they voted their old logo retired in 2007 as their favourite. Then in September 2018, their COO Nicolas Ruszkowski stated they would have a rebrand for the 2019-20 season but he was fired by May 2019 and their was no rebrand (Icethetics). Well, now It looks like they are finally getting new uniforms and they will be looking to their past!
The report from The Athletic stated that they will be going back to their old 2D logo with minor alterations for a more modern look. We took a crack making our own modifications to improve the logo. What do you think?
As far as the jerseys go, they will be switching back to their white jersey design that they used from 1992-2007 for their aways. And for their new homes, they will be switching back to their black jersey that they wore for 2 seasons from 1993-1995. Here is the quote from the report describing the new jerseys:
The home jersey mockup is black with two red bands on the arms, encasing the numbers, and a single red stripe around the bottom. The away jersey is white with red bands on the arms and black forearms. It has a red stripe atop a black stripe running around its bottom edge.

I think these jerseys are a massive improvement on their current set which was introduced at the start of the Reebok era in 2007 and has been long over due for a change. Though, I still can't help but feel a little bummed out that they decided to just recycle past designs instead of coming up with something new and fresh that could still tie in their history. I like the black look in that it makes them the only team in the league with black as the primary colour and red as the secondary colour of their jerseys (Carolina's third is the only other current jersey with that colour scheme). Plus, the limited white in the design makes it is a very dark and intimidating look. But personally, I was hoping for them to go with a red jersey with gold being a more prominent colour in the design as not only would it match their logo but it would be a very unique colour scheme across all pro sports that really looks great together. But definitely still happy that they will be finally updating (or throwbacking?) their look!
We don't know when they will be making the official reveal especially since the current season hasn't even finished yet. They may wait until the Draft in October or maybe they will unveil them sooner to help keep their fans interested and excited about the team since they won't be seeing hockey for a long time!
