Seattle NHL Team Name & Colours Leaked... Or Is It Fake News?

Multiple reports have leaked information on the new Seattle NHL franchise's team name and colours. As per source Russian Machine Never Breaks, John Hoven of MayorsManor.com said on the Sirius/XM’s NHL radio station that the new Seattle NHL expansion team has landed on their new name... the Seattle Kraken!

“From everything that I’ve heard, it looks like Seattle Kraken is going to be the name, which is quite surprising, actually, when I was given that information just a couple of days ago. I was a little bit in shock personally, just because we had been told several times previously that that was not the name that they were going for.”

There were also reports of domain names that were registered under this name in January that could prove the truth of this claim.

So what is a kraken? A kraken is a gigantic mythical squid-like sea creature known for destroying ships passing Scandinavian seas. So basically an enormous octopus.

Hoven didn't stop there! He went on to also provide the primary colours that Seattle is going with...

“It looks like it’s a red and there’s what I call a teal-ish colour. It’s a lighter teal-ish colour, and black. Those seem to be the primary colours they’re going to be going with.”

Can't picture those colours in your head? Well Seattle actually hasn't really tried to hide this information from the public. If you look at their website you will see the red and light teal colour he was referring to!

Now it's up to you if you think that colour scheme can work... personally, I'm finding a hard time loving it. Though, they are basically pastel colours which are becoming more popular as of late. The question is can it work on a hockey jersey. You can also see the nod to the sea as I would say it is salmon red and a sea green colour. And since those colours are so light in tone it will need a dark black to balance it out.

Since we won't be getting the real logo and jersey for a while I thought I would make a concept to piece everything together. Here is our Seattle Kraken jersey concept in our Puck Marks Template. I tried to tie in the striping from the historic Seattle Metropolitans jersey while going with a more modern design. I also used the number font from an NHL Seattle jersey the franchise had when they were announced as the 32nd NHL team. The primary logo design is credited to Dexterous and the shoulder patch logo design is credited to Legault Designs.

Now having said all of that, I will leave you with one last thought. For some reason I have a sneaky suspicion that this whole Kraken team name report is 100% bogus! Now, I could be wrong but that's just my gut feeling. Every time I look at the Seattle colour scheme - which I do believe is true - I see SALMON! It's obviously a salmon red. And guess what one of the names were that Seattle had registered... The Seattle SOCKEYES! A sockeye is literally a type of salmon! And I certainly don't see this colour scheme relating that well to a giant octopus. This wouldn't be the first time the public got thrown for a loop with a new NHL expansion team name. Everyone seemed to think that Vegas was going to be called the Vegas Desert Knights until they revealed they were actually the Vegas Golden Knights.

So, could the Seattle franchise just be trying to mess up the fans so they could surprise everyone that much more when they do finally make the reveal? I mean, judging by the surprised reaction of John Hoven and the many other reports that reject the Kraken name, I would not be surprised for a second if it were false! So when will we find out? Pretty soon actually! Seattle was expected to officially unveil their new team name, logo and colours in February so the news could break in the next few weeks!
